The Minority in Parliament is set to file a motion seeking a parliamentary inquiry into a reported GH¢22 billion loss attributed to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) in 2025.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said the Caucus will formally submit the motion to compel GoldBod’s management to appear before Parliament and provide answers on the circumstances surrounding the reported loss.
According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, the motion will be filed before Members of Parliament return from their current break next week.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, the Minority Leader said Parliament must have the opportunity to scrutinise GoldBod’s financial transactions and establish what led to the reported loss.
He called on the Majority Caucus to support the proposed inquiry, arguing that the issue concerns accountability for public resources and should not be subjected to political considerations.
“Our motion is ready. We will file it before we get back next week, and we pray that you, the Majority in Parliament, will fully cooperate with us, the Minority. Something must be done,” he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin rejected suggestions that the Minority’s push for an inquiry is politically motivated.
He maintained that the Caucus is seeking transparency and accountability over the reported GH¢22 billion loss and wants GoldBod’s management to explain the financial transactions that resulted in the reported figure.
The Minority Leader argued that Parliament has a constitutional responsibility to scrutinise the use and management of public resources and should therefore be allowed to investigate the matter without political interference.
Mr Afenyo-Markin also challenged the Majority to support the motion when it is formally presented to Parliament.
He said bipartisan cooperation would enable lawmakers to establish the facts surrounding the reported loss and determine whether any financial or administrative shortcomings contributed to it.
