Bawumia Sets NPP’s 2028 Victory as Party’s Main Goal After Regional Elections

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has declared that the party’s primary objective is to regain political power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.

Dr Bawumia said the NPP’s ongoing internal reorganisation is a critical part of efforts to rebuild the party’s structures, strengthen its grassroots base and prepare members for the next general election.

He made the remarks on Sunday, August 16, 2026, when he addressed newly elected Greater Accra Regional executives following the party’s regional executive elections held on August 15.

The former Vice President urged the newly elected executives to fully commit themselves to the party’s reorganisation process and work towards strengthening the NPP at all levels.

According to Dr Bawumia, the regional elections should not be considered the conclusion of the party’s internal activities but rather another stage in a broader process designed to build a stronger and more effective political organisation.

“The goal for all of us is to win the 2028 election. This is just a stepping stone towards winning 2028,” he said.

Dr Bawumia noted that the party had already conducted elections at various levels as part of its reorganisation, including polling station, electoral area and constituency elections.

He said the completion of the regional elections brings the party closer to concluding the internal restructuring exercise with the national elections scheduled for October 10, 2026.

Dr Bawumia said the completion of the national elections would provide the NPP with a stronger organisational structure to drive its campaign towards the 2028 polls.

“We will culminate that process on October 10 with the national elections and therefore, at the end of that, the party will be in a good position to have that vehicle that drives us to victory in 2028. So there is a lot of work ahead of us.”

He urged the newly elected regional executives to recognise the responsibility that comes with their positions and avoid treating their election as merely a political achievement.

The NPP is currently undertaking a nationwide internal reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The exercise has seen the party conduct elections at various levels as it seeks to renew its structures and strengthen coordination ahead of the 2028 elections.

Dr Bawumia’s message to the Greater Accra executives places the party’s organisational restructuring within a broader objective of returning the NPP to government.
