Breakdown of Ghana’s recorded MPOX cases
According to the report, all 16 regions have now recorded suspected cases, while confirmed cases have been found in 10 regions. The spread has also affected 30 districts across the country. Public health coordination teams have been activated in every affected region.
In response to the surge, heightened surveillance measures have been implemented, and a national webinar on outbreak management was held, attracting over 1,800 healthcare professionals. These steps are designed to ensure early detection, response, and containment of the virus.
Contact Tracing and Monitoring
The cumulative number of identified contacts has risen to 749, with 81 new contacts traced since the last report. So far, 148 individuals have completed the mandatory 21-day follow-up, and four contacts have transitioned into confirmed cases.
The latest confirmed infections include six new cases, ranging from 1 to 35 years old, with four females affected. These cases were reported in the North East (3 cases), Western (2 cases), and Ashanti (1 case) regions.
Laboratory Testing and Clinical Response
All new samples tested by the National Public Health & Reference Laboratory (NPHRL) have been confirmed as Clade II of the MPOX virus. Testing continues in collaboration with NMIMR and KCCR, the country’s designated laboratories for MPOX.
Public health materials focused on diagnosis and differential diagnosis have been distributed to clinicians to enhance case management. Most patients remain stable and are being managed outside of hospital settings.
Risk Communication and Community Engagement
Ghana Health Service has also intensified its public education efforts. Key messages and information materials have been disseminated to regional health promotion officers, border entry staff, and officials from the Wildlife Division.
By maintaining open communication channels and encouraging early symptom reporting, authorities aim to limit the spread of the virus and foster community trust.
