A Deputy National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Youth Organiser aspirant is battling for his life after he was allegedly attacked during the party’s branch executives elections at the Bamboo Factory Polling Station in Assin Fosu.
The victim, identified as Yaw Owusu, reportedly sustained multiple serious injuries after violence erupted during the election over alleged discrepancies in the vote count.
According to Yaw Owusu, the incident occurred during the election of the Women’s Organiser when election officials announced that 17 delegates were eligible to vote. However, after voting ended, 25 ballots were reportedly counted, prompting him and some supporters to question what they believed to be an instance of over-voting.
Owusu alleged that shortly after raising concerns about the discrepancy, he was attacked by a group of men believed to be affiliated with rival factions within the party.
He claimed the assailants assaulted him with sticks and sharp objects, leaving him with severe injuries before fleeing the scene.
The injured aspirant was rushed to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu for emergency treatment but was later referred to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital due to the severity of his condition.
Medical reports indicate that Owusu suffered a fractured neck, an eye injury, head trauma and suspected spinal injuries. He remains under specialist medical care.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Owusu appealed to the National Executives of the NDC, particularly the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, to intervene and ensure that those responsible for the attack are identified and prosecuted.
He called on the party leadership to help safeguard the integrity of its internal electoral processes and prevent similar incidents in future elections.
Meanwhile, the assault has been reported to the Central North Regional Police Command, which has commenced investigations into the incident.
